Wood-fired pizza on Margate’s Harbour Arm
- June 11, 2012 -
Street food truck the Great British Pizza Company open their first permanent site on Margate’s Harbour Arm this Friday (15th June 2012), which boasts the Turner Contemporary as its neighbour.
The Great British Pizza Company started out life in the back of a truck. Well, a 1974 Volkswagen Campervan, to be specific. Touring farmers’ markets, festivals and events since March of this year, the pair behind the mobile wood-fired pizza company have decided to put down roots in up-and-coming seaside town Margate.
Margate, chosen as one of Mary Portas’s 12 Pilot Towns, boasts a growing Old Town filled with independently-owned boutiques and cafés, as well as artists’ studios and gallery spaces. Currently hosting hometown girl Tracey Emin’s first ever Margate exhibition in the stunning new Turner Contemporary, this classic British seaside town is on the up.
The Great British Pizza Company cooks delicious wood-fired pizzas (in just two minutes) using fresh, local ingredients, homemade dough and a homemade, slow-cooked tomato sauce. Neopolitan in style (with a thin, crispy base and bubbling crust), the pizzas have been a hit at festivals and food events since March of this year.
Now with a base (excuse the pizza pun) in Margate and with a branch in Bath soon to open up (where the team there will be focusing on events, weddings, festivals and farmers’ markets), the Great British Pizza Company is growing fast.
Inspired by the food truck conventions in the States and the growing street food movement in the UK, the company’s owners are a trained chef and keen foodie who’s currently a social media consultant by day. That’s soon to change as the business gets bigger.
The unit on Margate’s Harbour Arm, overlooking the town’s pristine sandy beaches, will be open from Wednesday to Sunday at lunch and dinner, serving freshly-made wood-fired pizza. Take the pizza away, or eat al fresco on the Harbour Arm whilst taking in the view and a glass of wine (the unit is fully-licensed).
How to find the best pizza in Thanet? Look along the Harbour Arm and look out for Gus, the GB Pizza Co’s Great Big Pizza Bus: a dark red VW Type 2 Campervan.
Opening date: Friday 15th June 2012. Look out for the GB Pizza Co team and their blue Great Dane Henry as they give out “50% off” flyers in and around Margate for Friday’s opening event.
