Margate in Kent is the site of our first permanent restaurant.
Surrounded by amazing Kentish produce, we developed our concept for a Great British pizza inspired by local producers and using the very best of British produce, wherever we possibly can.
Out & about in Margate
The seaside resort is undergoing a very exciting period of transition and development, with a vibrant arts-based local community creating exciting events and spaces in which to work.
Turner Contemporary attracts visitors in their thousands to world-class exhibitions of major artists. The town excitedly welcomed the reopening of Dreamland last summer, while its collection of vintage stores attract keen-eyed shoppers from all over the country. Some of our favourites include Junk Deluxe, Margate Retro and Paraphernalia, to name just a few. Newcomers Mor Margate & The Light Keeper are great new additions to our growing town of makers, artists, designers and inventive shopkeepers.
Visit the Old Town and its beautiful shops, cafes and restaurants; bathe in the light that Turner called “the finest in all Europe”; head to our Blue Flag beaches and take to the water in our Victorian bathing pools. The Shell Grotto, Tudor House, Theatre Royal, Tom Thumb Theatre, Winter Gardens and the Walpole Bay Hotel are just a few of the must-see sights.
Some of our favourites: The Reading Rooms offers beautiful rooms for discerning visitors. Haeckels, up on Cliff Terrace in Cliftonville, creates beautifully-packaged fragrances and products made from harvested seaweed and promotes its Made Of Margate brand to the world (find them also in the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, East London, as well as Fortnum & Mason). Round the corner is the now world-famous Resort Studios (visited by the Duchess of Cambridge in 2015), a fizzing creative hub of artists, photographers and printmakers.
Other people and places we love include:
Cliffs on Northdown Road, a newly-opened coffee & record shop. Damn fine coffee. Urchin Wines is an excellent independent wine shop, offering not-in-the-supermarket vintages, plus occasional pop-up food nights.
Transmission Records: another new Northdown Road opening, Transmission specialises in obscure movie soundtracks, blues, indie and 60s & 70s jazz. Look out for live performances.
Margate Arts Club x Sink The Pink – Amy Redmond, founder of Sink The Pink, has opened a wonderful new arts and club space on Northdown Road, which features regular nights, performances and DJs. We love it. Look out for regular visits from Redmond’s Sink The Pink family at venues around Margate.
GB•PIZZA•CO is just one of many, many great restaurants and eateries in the area. Here are just a few of the other food and drink joints in Thanet that we frequently frequent: Angela’s, Hantverk & Found, Cheesy Tiger, Roost, Urchin Wines, Mala Kaffe, The Grain Grocer, Godwin Fish Bar, Walpole Bay Hotel, Archive, Queen Charlotte, Ravensgate Arms, The Cornerhouse, Peter’s Fish Factory, Greedy Cow.
